Title: Impact of ChatGPT on Academic Paper Writing: Challenges and Potentials


Abstract: Rapid advanced in Artificial Intelligence have become increasingly prevalent in academic world, especially the launch of Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer (ChatGPT). ChatGPT has the capability to generate academic texts which gained significant interest and attention in academic community. The present work addresses the academic issues and potential benefits of ChatGPT on academic paper writing. The developers acknowledged that ChatGPT may produce imprecise and unintelligible feedback. The AI-generated contents may also challenge the academic instruction and academic integrity, resulting in plagiarism and a lack of originality in research paper writing. Despite the concerns, ChatGPT can be applied purposefully and systematically in writing instruction to improve writing accuracy and discourse awareness. First, ChatGPT can be utilized as a tool to review the literature on a topic by providing the detailed summary of literature, which saves researchers the time and efforts to focus on the more important tasks. ChatGPT can also elaborate each viewpoint on a research outline to provide the needed information even from some unclear ideas, which is conductive especially to the novice writers. Additionally, in writing pedagogy, the teachers can be trained to recognized the ChatGPT-generated texts compared with human writers by investigating the different linguistic features, which helps to ensure the integrity of writing. What’s more, the application of ChatGPT can reduce the workload of language teachers by providing personalized and timely feedback, which may strengthen the students’ writing abilities and improve their writing accuracy. Therefore, by fully utilizing the capabilities of ChatGPT, we can keep alert to its pitfalls and unlock its potentials across challenges, leading to advancements in academic integrity of research paper writing.
